The Supreme Court of New Mexico is seeking applicants to serve as the State Law Librarian (U) for the State of New Mexico, which is a full-time, at-will position. The target pay range is $35.578 per hour to $55.590 per hour. The position is located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in the historic Supreme Court Building. Summary of the position:
Under administrative direction by the Chief Justice and Justices of the Supreme Court, the State Law Librarian manages statewide library operations, sets policies and standards for access to legal information and records management, supervises a professional law librarian staff, and manages the work of the Supreme Court Law Library.
Juris Doctor from an American Bar Association accredited law school and Master’s Degree in Library/Information Science from an American Library Association accredited college or university, which must include 12 credit hours of public administration or library management and 12 credit hours of computer science or records management.
- Education Substitute:
Two (2) years managing administrative functions of a law library will substitute for the course work in public administration or library management.
Certification as a Records Manager (CRM), Novell Administrator (CAN), or a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) will substitute for the course work in computer science or records management.
Five (5) years’ experience managing administrative functions of a library; of which, three (3) years’ experience must have been supervisory and reference; and two (2) years legal working experience as an attorney.
General statement of duties: The successful candidate will be a person of high ethical standards, and will bring a service-first orientation to the New Mexico Supreme Court Library. Our new State Law Librarian will take initiative and exercise appropriate independent judgment in a creative, collaborative, courteous, diplomatic, and organized manner. Our new Library Director will be accountable to the New Mexico Courts, other governmental agencies, and the citizens of our State for public access to, and preservation of, legal information. The prospective Director will demonstrate experience and past success in all aspects of library administration, including developing strategic plans; creating reliable financial and budget projections and reports; negotiating contracts; hiring, training, evaluating, motivating, and if necessary, replacing professional library staff; and, delegating and managing work assignments resulting in high quality and timely delivery. Essential characteristics include people and prioritization skills, expert legal research and analysis, and clear and concise communication skills in verbal and written formats. Current awareness of computer applications as well as trends in print and digital publishing are also required. And the ability to respond to multiple,
competing demands is a must to grow the statewide service that we envision.
